Notes:
Wingate’s orchestration of his own 2005 organ piece Landscapes of Consciousness was created shortly after the birth of the original, and was fashioned from a somber but intense orchestral palette expanding upon the sonic powers and gravitas of the concert organ. As the piece’s musicscapes fluctuate disquietlingly between the meditative and the paroxysmal, the ensemble’s heavier symphonic textures are contrasted with more subdued, chamber-music-like configurations. A solo viola or two are often found meandering the labyrinth of the score, their plaintive tones transfigured by the odd woodwind pairing. Meanwhile, the recurring disruptive tuttis threaten to overwhelm the piece, at times evoking epic film score gestures or eruptions of buried psychoses. But after all the contrapuntal twists and turns, the piece concludes with quietly insistent low chords, exhausted beneath the hovering, crystalline string formations.
