Notes:
Wingate’s 2005 work Landscapes of Consciousness attempts to give us a brief musical glimpse into the disparate realms of the psyche, and the original organ version accomplishes this with dramatic registration changes and breathless tenacity. Stravinsky once famously commented that he had written no music for the organ because “the monster does not breathe,” but this perpetual exhalation is, of course, one of the instrument’s greatest strengths. The dark tension of the piece’s inner vistas abide in the struggle between the incessant perfect fifths and the wayward minor thirds hovering a semitone above, shading the work with a strangely comforting instability as it stretches across the horizon into the distant corners of the soul.
