WINGATE: METAPHYSICAL MONOLOGUE NO. 10
for Organ Solo
Date:
2023
Duration:
5'
Notes:
Perhaps the most theoretically complex of the MetaMon series (as well as the only iteration for a keyboard instrument), the Metaphysical Monologue No. 10 for organ uses its dodecaphonic materials in a Byzantine labyrinth of tone row permutations to create a densely woven sonic tapestry. Contrasting episodes of varied rhythmic patterns attempt to contain the wayward counterpoint until the various threads are spun out into an elaborate coda, evoking a somewhat demented version of the kind of rollicking compound meter found in the third fugue of Dieterich Buxtehude’s surperb Praeludium In G Minor BuxWV163. The overall busy and extroverted character of this Monologue contrasts markedly with Wingate’s other two organ works, Time Sculptures (1981) and Landscapes of Consciousness (2005).
